Cannabicyclol (CBL) is one of the rarest and least understood cannabinoids in cannabis. Formed as a product of light-induced degradation from cannabichromene (CBC), CBL exists in only trace amounts, especially in aged or oxidized material. As a true “molecule of time,” CBL invites scientists and healers alike to explore the mysterious depths of cannabis chemistry.
CBL’s molecular formula is C₂₁H₃₀O₂, with a molar mass of approximately 314.47 g/mol. Its structure is uniquely defined by a cyclobutane ring, the result of a photochemical rearrangement of CBC. CBL is classified as a degraded, neutral cannabinoid, and usually appears as a colorless oil. Its boiling point is estimated to be around 185 °C.
CBL has negligible affinity for CB₁ and CB₂ receptors and does not appear to exert direct psychoactive effects. Its biological role remains largely unexplored, but preliminary research hints at possible antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions. Most evidence so far suggests that CBL’s presence is a marker of cannabis aging, rather than a driver of major pharmacological effects.
To date, there are no established clinical applications for CBL. Early research is investigating its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and possible anti-tumor properties. CBL is found almost exclusively in aged or poorly stored cannabis, making standardized dosing and product development a challenge.
CBL is present only in minute quantities, often as an indicator of degradation or long storage. Its pharmacological safety and long-term effects are unknown, and there is little to no data on human exposure. As research continues, CBL may reveal more about the aging process in both the plant and its products.

Emerging research is exploring CBL’s potential roles in inflammation, oxidative stress, and as a biomarker for the age and quality of cannabis products. Some scientists speculate that CBL could have future applications as an antioxidant or in the preservation of plant extracts.
CBL stands as a subtle reminder of time, transformation, and the deep mysteries within the cannabis plant. Though largely silent in effect, it tells the story of the plant’s journey—from vibrancy to dormancy—and holds the promise of discoveries yet to come.
